Jason Bradley

Biographical Information[edit]

Jason Bradley was a minor league umpire from 2002 to 2010, working in the Gulf Coast League, New York-Penn League, South Atlantic League, Florida State League, Southern League and International League. He also umpired winter ball in the Dominican League. While he never got the chance to work in the major leagues - his career ended just before Major League Baseball began to give AAA umpires a chance to work major league games as temporary call-ups as part of their professional development - his work was well-regarded and earned him the opportunity to umpire in the 2007 Futures Game played at AT&T Park in San Francisco, CA.

He was involved in a famous incident in the Dominican League on January 16, 2010 when former major leaguer Jose Offerman, managing the Tigres del Licey, punched his colleague D.J. Reyburn because he was unhappy that Jason had ejected his catcher, Ronny Paulino, for arguing balls and strikes. Offerman, who was known for his short temper, having once assaulted an opposing pitcher with a bat in an Atlantic League game, was not only ejected but escorted from the ballpark by police and later received a lifetime ban from the league. Reyburn got over the incident and became a long-time big league umpire, but it made Jason reassess his priorities in life. He decided to change careers and worked for a year as sports director of his local YMCA in Waycross, GA before becoming a professional umpire evaluator and instructor for the Professional Baseball Umpire Corp. (PBUC). The PBUC is the entity which is responsible for the training, evaluation, and recommendation for promotion, retention, or release of all umpires in the Minor League Baseball system throughout the United States and Canada. This allowed him to remain involved in umpiring, without facing some of the stresses associated with the job. He combined this with working as an advisor for a wellness and fitness company while being based in the Tampa, FL-St. Petersburg, FL area. He also umpires college baseball games.
