Biographical Information[edit]

James McDonald was drafted as a pitcher, then played two seasons as an outfielder in the minor leagues after being a pitcher in 2003. He batted .224 and .229 in his two seasons as a position player, then was converted back to pitching in 2006. In a neat coincidence, his signing scout was Bobby Darwin, who had also switched from pitcher to outfielder.

He is a cousin of major league outfielders Donzell McDonald and Darnell McDonald and minor leaguer Darin McDonald; his uncle was minor leaguer Donzell McDonald Sr.. His father, also called James McDonald, was a tight end for the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL in the 1980s.
