Biographical Information[edit]

James Burke was in one game each in 1882 and 1883, seeing the bulk of his time in the Union Association's lone year of existence, when he went 19-15 for the Boston Reds, who finished over .500 under Tim Murnane. In early editions of the Baseball Encyclopedia, he was wrongly listed as Walter Burke and the playing record of Bill Burke was added to his own. He is not to be confused with Jimmy Burke, who came along in the 1890s.
