Biographical Information[edit]

Third baseman Jake Burger was the 11th player picked overall in the 2017 amateur draft, as the first-round selection of the Chicago White Sox. he was coming off an excellent junior season at Missouri State University, where he had hit .328/.443/.648 with 22 homers and more walks (43) than strikeouts (38). He had been undrafted out of high school.

He started his professional career with the AZL White Sox, but was moved up to the Kannapolis Intimidators of the South Atlantic League after just four games. With Kannapolis, he hit .271/.335/.409 in 47 games. He was a non-roster invitee to spring training in 2018, but while playing in a Cactus League game on February 26th, he fell in running out a ground ball to third and tore his left Achilles tendon. The injury forced him to miss the entire season. As he explained: "Honestly, it felt like a gunshot. I went down and I kind of immediately knew something was wrong. There's nothing really to say. It sucks but I have to stay positive." To make things worse, he re-injured the tendon while walking around his backyard in early May and had to have surgery again.

He made his major league debut with the White Sox on July 2, 2021, only three days after having been named to take part in the 2021 Futures Game. He went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored in an 8-2 game over the Detroit Tigers.

On August 1, 2023, the White Sox traded him to the Miami Marlins for minor leaguer Jake Eder. This was one of a series of trades in which Chi9cago exchanged veteran players for prospects around that time. After hitting .214 with 25 homers and 52 RBIs in 88 games for Chicago, he hit .303 in 53 games for Miami, although with less power (9 homers and 28 RBIs). Given the tough hitting environment in Miami, his OPS+ was an excellent 126, after being at 114 with the Sox. He made his postseason debut that season, going 2 for 7 as Miami was swept in two games by the Philadelphia Phillies in the Wild Card Series.

He returned to Miami in 2024 and continued as one of the best hitters on a team struggling to generate offense. He had a terrific power surge in August when he hit six homers in a six-game span from August 7-13th.

Burger's father Mike played college baseball at the University of Evansville, where his mother was a tennis player.
