Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jake Bloss was already in graduate school at Georgetown University when he was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 3rd round of the 2023 amateur draft. It was the result of having been granted an extra year of collegiate eligibility after seeing his 2020 season at Lafayette College cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he had completed his undergraduate studies by 2022, so he transferred to the prestigious academic institution located in Washington, DC for his final season.

If he stayed longer than anticipated in college, he breezed through the minors. In 2023, he pitched 7 games between the FCL Astros and the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, going 1-1, 2.89. He started 2024 in the South Atlantic League, going 1-1, 2.08 in 4 games for the Asheville Tourists, then moved up to the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Texas League. He went 3-1, 1.61 in 8 starts before getting his next promotion, this one straight to Houston. He made his debut on June 21st, starting against the Baltimore Orioles two days before his 22nd birthday, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits in 3 2/3 innings and ending up with a no-decision. He made two more starts for Houston, getting charged with a loss, and was going to make his fourth on July 29th facing none other than Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates when his name was scratched at the last minute. The reason soon became clear as it was announced that he was one of three players traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in return for P Yusei Kikuchi (the others were OF Joey Loperfido, who had also made his debut that year, and minor league IF Will Wagner).
