Early development

Kahaulelio's early development occured with the Santa Rosa Connie Mack Baseball amateur development program in 2002 and 2003.

Collegiate career

Kahaulelio began his collegiate career with the Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs in 2005.

In 2005 and 2006, Kahaulelio played for the Peninsula Oilers in the collegiate Alaska Baseball League. Playing in 40 games in 2005, Jake hit .335 with 4 HRs and 27 RBI. During the 2006 campaign he hit .343 with 2 HRs and 6 RBI in 29 games. He also posted a .961 fielding percentage. Kahaulelio was a 2006 Alaska Baseball League All-League Selection at shortstop and was also named Player of the Year for the league. Jake is fourth all-time on the Oilers' career batting average list with .337 and is tied for second on their all-time doubles list with 22 in his career with Peninsula.

In 2006 and 2007, Kahaulelio played college ball for the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles. For 2006, Jake compiled a .323 batting average in 57 games with 20 doubles, 4 HRs and 50 RBI. In 2007, Kahaulelio earned first-team all Mid-Continent Conference honors after hitting .314 with six home runs and 46 RBIs as a senior. He started all 57 games and compiled a .972 fielding percentage as a second baseman.

Minor league career

Kahaulelio was chosen by the Cincinnati Reds in the twentieth round of the 2007 amateur draft (619th overall). Shortly after being signed, Jake spent some time on the disabled list.

Jake started the 2008 season in extended spring training. He was called up to the Dayton Dragons on April 7. After a disappointing start where he only hit .167 in 4 games for Dayton, he was sent back down to extended spring training on April 21. In late May, he was assigned to the Sarasota Reds. Kahaulelio suffered an unspecified injury after colliding with right fielder Chris Heisey in the fourth inning of a game against the St. Lucie Mets on May 25.

So far in his professional career, Kahaulelio has been playing second base.
