Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder J.J. Johnson was taken in the supplemental first round of the 1991 amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox as the 37th pick. He was chosen one spot after pitcher Bobby J. Jones and signed by scout Matt Sczesny. Though he spent nine years in the minor leagues – and parts of two at Triple-A – he never reached the major leagues.

Not a strong hitter, Johnson reached double-digit home runs four times, peaking at 18 for the Jackson (MS) Generals in 1999. A few years earlier, in 1996, he hit 17 for the Hardware City Rock Cats and Triple-A Salt Lake Buzz. That was his first taste of Triple-A; in 13 games with the club, he hit .339/.362/.482. In his second taste of Triple-A, with the Buzz in 1997, he hit .146/.195/.183 in 26 games.

Overall, Johnson hit .251/.312/.395 with 82 home runs and 396 RBI over 862 games.

On July 6, 1995, he was traded with Frank Rodriguez to the Minnesota Twins for Rick Aguilera.
