Biographical Information[edit]

Huan-Yang Chen has pitched in the CPBL.

Chen was drafted by the Sinon Bulls in the sixth round of the 2009 CPBL Draft.[1] He spent his first season in the CPBL minor league, and he had a solid 2.96 ERA in 33 appearances. The Sinon Corporation had financial problems in 2011, so they didn't have any foreign players in the 2011 season. What's worse, four of their pitchers were injured before the season, and the Bulls only had 8 active pitchers on their roster to start the 2011 season. Thus, rookie Chen was overused and he pitched 57 games with a 4.32 ERA in 123 innings as a reliever. He was third in games pitched (3 behind Chia-Wei Lin and Yu-Chieh Shen) and 8th in IP (between Ying-Chieh Lin and Ching-Ming Wang).

The Taitung native was still a solid reliever in 2012, and he had a league-leading 63 appearances (one ahead of Chia-Wei Lin) with a 4.27 ERA. He was selected into the 2012 CPBL All-Star Game, and he pitched a shutout inning and got the win. The Bulls became the EDA Rhinos in 2013, and Chen had a 4.50 ERA in 51 appearances in this season. He ranked 7th in holds (22 behind Hiroki Sanada) and 7th in appearances (16 behind Sanada). In the 2013 Taiwan Series, he pitched an inning with a run allowed in Game 1, and the Rhinos were swept by the Uni-President Lions.[2]

However, the overuse ruined Chen's shoulder, and he only pitched 6 games with the big club in 2014. He led the minor league with 5 saves and recorded a 2.97 ERA in 26 games in 2015, but his ERA was 8.44 in the major league. He even struggled in the minors in 2016, as his ERA rose to 8.78. Chen only pitched 2 games in 2017, and his professional career ended.

Chen's repertoire features a fastball that peaks at 93.8 mph, a slider, forkball and curveball.

Overall, Chen was 10-17 with a 4.87 ERA, collected 21 holds and 217 strikeouts, while he pitched 297 1/3 innings in 196 appearances in 7 years in the CPBL.
