Biographical Information

Hoss Bowlin overcame an early bout with testicular cancer to earn a late-season call-up with the Kansas City A's in 1967 and live a long life. Bowlin got one hit in 5 big league at-bats, singling off Jack Hamilton in his debut.

Bowlin sat out the last few games at Single A Northwest League Lewiston in 1963 with pain after taking a ground ball to the groin. After attending instructional league and facing persistent pain upon his return home to Arkansas, Bowlin went to a doctor. On his 23rd birthday in December, he went into surgery and had a tumor removed. Bowlin went to spring training in 1964 and stuck with the AA Birmingham Barons. He spent the next several years bouncing between AA and AAA as a light-hitting infielder for the A's and the Minnesota Twins organization.

Bowlin got into coaching, serving as an assistant at Alabama under Joe Sewell while earning his degree during offseasons. He went on to manage the Midwest League Wisconsin Rapids Twins in 1971, before settling in to coach baseball at the Livingston University from 1973-1986.
