Biographical Information

Héctor Almonte pitched 50 games in the major leagues with the Florida Marlins, the Boston Red Sox and the Montreal Expos. His fastball was clocked at 98 mph but lacked movement, while his control was always problematic, which is why he had only limited success in the bigs. He is the brother of Erick Almonte.

Almonte earned his first major league win playing for the Expos on August 27, 2003; he blew a 6-2 lead by serving up a grand slam to the Phillies' Marlon Byrd in the top of the 7th inning but the Expos came back to score a run in the bottom of the inning, and went on to win the game, 7-6. On August 30, he broke Mike Lowell's wrist with a pitch; the Marlins immediately re-acquired Jeff Conine from the Baltimore Orioles to take his place.

Almonte also played for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan for two seasons; he had five seasons of Triple A experience in the Marlins, Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies and Atlanta Braves organizations. He finished the 2005 season in Saltillo of the Mexican League, where he had a 2-0 record and a 1.54 ERA in 10 games pitched.
