Hatuey "Chuy" Mendoza played in the Arizona Diamondbacks minor league system from 1997-2001. He also played for the Anaheim Angels (after being picked in the minor league portion of the 2001 Rule V Draft) and Cincinnati Reds organizations in 2002 and 2004, respectively. In his seven minor league seasons, he had a record of 32-66 with two saves and an ERA of 5.72. Mendoza completed his playing career in 2006 with the independent league Newark Bears. A highlight was May 13, 2002, when he threw a no-hitter for the Arkansas Travelers against the Tulsa Drillers. He was 0-1 with a 7.04 ERA for the Dominican national team in the 2002 Intercontinental Cup, losing to Venezuela's Jose Blanco. He won Bronze with them in the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games.
In 2008 Mendoza returned to the Diamondbacks organization. He served as the team's Latin Liaison from 2008-2014 followed by three years as Coordinator for Latin American Operations. Mendoza then moved into the coaching ranks for the D'backs. He coached the AZL Diamondbacks in 2018 and the Hillsboro Hops in 2019. Mendoza was scheduled to be the AZL Diamondbacks pitching coach in 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of the minor league season. When play resumed in 2021, Chuy was the organization's Minor League Short Season Pitching Coordinator. He returned to the field once again as a pitching coach for the ACL Diamondbacks Black in 2022-2023 and ACL Diamondbacks in 2024.
