Biographical Information[edit]

Gus Shallix pitched in the majors in 1884-85. Pitching for the 1884 Cincinnati Red Stockings, he went 11-10, and pitching for the 1885 Cincinnati Red Stockings, he was 6-4. A teammate during both years, and manager during part of 1884, was Will White, brother of Deacon White.

Shallix also played for Nashville in 1885. Sporting News from July 22, 1885 reported that in his first game for Nashville he gave up only five hits. The paper reported "Marr" was the catcher - apparently Lefty Marr.

He was born in Germany in 1858, the same year that Joe Straub and Bill Kuehne were born in Germany. As a major league hitter he was not much, going 8-for-123. As a comparison to other pitchers on the 1884 team, Will White hit .190 that year, Bill Mountjoy hit .151, and Shallix hit .036 that season (Ren Deagle had no hits, but only had 13 at-bats). In 1885 Shallix moved his average up to .128, but all the other regular pitchers hit at least .150.

Although he did not pitch as many games as some of the other pitchers, Shallix was in the top ten in the league each season in hit-batsmen. Will White led the league in 1884 with 35 hit-batsmen (in 456 innings), while Shallix hit 26 in 199 innings. On the other hand, his strikeouts/nine innings ratio of 3.5 was far higher than that of White, who was at 2.3.

Shallix died in 1937 in Cincinnati, OH.
