Biographical Information

Lefty Marr, oddly enough, was not a pitcher but a position player in the majors. He appeared in four major league seasons and was an above-average hitter in 1889 and 1890.

Being left-handed was unusual for a player who appeared at third base in 129 games and at shortstop in 29. He is # 2 on the list of left-handed third basemen who played the most games, behind Hick Carpenter.

He led the American Association in triples in 1889. In spite of having a good season, on one day he made four errors, and Chris Von der Ahe accused him of throwing the game, which was not true. Source: Baseball in 1889: Players vs. Owners.

His obituary in the January 12, 1912 New York Times said that he was found dead in a hotel of unknown causes (later determined to be heart disease). He had played in the minors for Evansville, Syracuse and Montreal, and had also played for a "local team" in New Britain, CT.

In 1896, he managed the Portsmouth Browns of the Virginia League for the first part of the season.

The Sporting Life of March 13, 1897, referred to "Charles E. Marr, the famous 'Lefty' " as playing for Richmond.
