Greer Stadium

Greer Stadium in Nashville, TN, was the home of Nashville affiliated baseball from 1978 through 2014. After that, the Nashville Sounds of the Pacific Coast League moved into a new ballpark that had been constructed on the 1870-1969 site of Nashville baseball, Sulphur Dell.

Built for little more than $1 million on city land and named for the founder of Nashville's last previous professional club, Herschel Greer, Greer Stadium opened as the Double-A Southern League expanded by two franchises to replace two teams the Eastern League contracted after the 1977 season.

Vanderbilt University baseball coach Larry Schmittou and partners including country music stars Conway Twitty, Jerry Reed, and Richard Sterban founded the Sounds with the erstwhile EL franchise and got Greer Stadium built.

Demolished in 2019, Greer Stadium hosted much history: it led the Southern League in attendance every season it was in that circuit, 1978-1984; its 380,159 attendance led all the minors in 1979; a still-standing SL record 575,676 attendance in 1980; the largest one-game crowd, 22,315, 1982; the move of the Triple-A Evansville Triplets to Nashville, 1985; back-to-back no-hitters, 1987; addition of a guitar-shaped scoreboard, 1993; two teams sharing the ballpark in 1993-1994 - the other being the displaced Double-A Charlotte Knights, as the Nashville Xpress; John Wasdin's perfect game, 2003; unique cross-affiliation (the Sounds were the top affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers and the Milwaukee Admirals were the top affiliate of the NHL's Nashville Predators), 2005-2014. The last should have resumed with the Brewers' 2021 return as the Sounds' parent club, but the Admirals had already suspended operations for the 2020-2021 hockey season because of the Coronavirus pandemic. The Admirals returned, back with the Preds, in the 2021-2022 campaign.

The original Triple-A Sounds played in the old American Association, but after it was disbanded before the 1998 season, Greer Stadium became the easternmost ballpark in the Pacific Coast League.
