Biographical Information[edit]
Grant Brittain has been a minor league infielder and a scout.
Brittain was excellent in college in 1990 hitting .428/~.550/.872 with 67 runs, 68 RBI, 20 homers, 49 walks and 15 steals in 58 games. He was 13th in NCAA Division I in average and tied Paul Bruno for 12th in home runs. He was named the ABCA All-American pick at 2B, though Baseball America left him off their All-American team, going with Anthony Manahan first-team, David Tollison second-team and Kevin Jordan third-team. Undrafted, he signed with the Atlanta Braves. He batted .274/.437/.429 with 63 walks, 48 runs and 48 RBI in 67 games that summer for the Idaho Falls Chukars, fielding .954 at SS. He was 5th in the Pioneer League in OBP (between Eric Blackwell and Mike Busch), led in walks (13 more than #2 Kevin Riggs), tied Tom Duffin for 6th in RBI, tied Busch and Rusty Greer for 8th in runs and led shortstops in putouts (134), double plays (52) and fielding percentage. He was an easy pick as the league's All-Star shortstop.
Brittain declined significantly over the next two years, though. He hit .221/.378/.346 for the 1991 Macon Braves, with 7 triples, 63 runs, 69 walks and 15 steals in 23 tries. With Chipper Jones at SS, Brittain moved to third, where he fielded only .894. He tied Jones and Ernesto Rodriguez for 10th in the South Atlantic League in walks. He backed up Hector Roa at 2B for the 1992 Durham Bulls and eked out a .144/.252/.222 line in 44 games, with 42 strikeouts in 90 at-bats.
Overall, he had hit .230/.384/.359 with 145 walks and 123 runs in 205 minor league games. He played 79 games at SS (.951 FLD%), 78 at 3B (.893) and 52 at 2B (.959).
Brittain then scouted for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox, primarily in the Carolinas. His signees have included Zach Duke, Jeff Ferrell, Will Inman, Patrick Lawson and Luke Putkonen.
