Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Giomar Guevara only played briefly in the major leagues, with a total of 26 games spread over three seasons with the Seattle Mariners between 1997 and 1999. He only went to bat 29 times, hitting .207, but 4 of his 6 big league hits were doubles. His role was that of utility infielder, seeing most of his action as a defensive replacement at shortstop and second base, with a few starts interspersed. He was also used as a pinch-runner a few times.
He was originally signed by the Mariners as an international amateur free agent out of Venezuela on November 13, 1990. After a decade in their organization, he signed with the Detroit Tigers as a free agent in December of 1999. He only reached AAA in 1997, the same year in which he made his major league debut as a September call-up, and played only sparingly in both 1998 and 1999, the other two seasons during which he was in the majors, with 33 games in Class A and AA in 1998, and 32 in AAA in 1999. He spent two full seasons in AAA with the Toledo Mud Hens after signing with Detroit, hitting .282 in 109 games in 2000 but falling to .235 in 2001. His final season was with the AA Midland RockHounds of the Texas League, an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, in 2002, where he hit .251 in 103 games. Overall, he hit .262 in 10 minor league seasons, but with limited power (155 doubles, 25 triples and 37 homers). Following his playing career he was a coach in the Baltimore Orioles minor league system for a couple of seasons.
