Biographical Information

George Bone got a chance to play shortstop on the 1901 Milwaukee Brewers when Wid Conroy was not in the lineup... which was not often. Bone played 12 games, hitting a good .302 on a team that hit .261; Conroy hit .256. They were both thought to be 24 years old and were both rookies (more recent information indicates that Bone was in fact two years older than he claimed). Bone, however, made 8 errors in 12 games, while Conroy made 59 errors in 118 games. The Brewers (who became the St. Louis Browns the following year) kept neither of them in 1902. They picked up veteran Bobby Wallace who was to be their starting shortstop for over a decade.

Bone played minor league ball as early as 1896 with New Haven and from 1903-1905 played in the Connecticut State League. He is a cinch to make the "All Body Part" team, along with players such as Dave Brain, Roy Face, and Harry Cheek.
