Biographical Information

George Archie was the regular third baseman for the Washington Senators in 1941.

Archie was signed for the Detroit Tigers by scout Eddie Goostree in the fall of 1933 and spent his first season in organized baseball with the Muskogee Tigers in the Class C Western Association the following year. He spent 1935 and 1936 with the Beaumont Exporters in the Class A Texas League. In 1937, he played with the Indianapolis Indians in the Class AA American Association, and the next year he was with the Toledo Mud Hens in the same league. He was called up by the Tigers at the end of the season and made his major league debut on September 14, 1938. The next two seasons were in the Class AA Pacific Coast League with the Seattle Rainiers, and in 1941 he split the year between the Washington Senators and the St. Louis Browns.

Archie was inducted into the Army on December 9, 1941, at Camp Forrest, in Tennessee, near his home. In 1942, he was at the Jefferson Barracks, MO, Reception Center and played baseball there. In 1943 he was at Fort Riley, KS, where he also played baseball, and at Camp Shelby, MS in 1944. The following year, he was with the 65th Calvary Reconnaissance Troop in France at the German front. His discharge from the Army was announced in January 1946, and he rejoined the Browns. After only four games, he was released and joined the Los Angeles Angels in the Class AAA Pacific Coast League.

He played 121 major league games for the Tigers, Senators, and Browns. He continued to play and manage in the minor leagues until 1950. In all, he played 12 seasons in the minors with a batting average of .305 and 117 home runs. He also managed at Texarkana in 1949 and 1950. Archie was later the baseball coach at Vanderbilt University in 1965-1967.
