Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Gene Schmidt played five seasons in the San Francisco Giants organization, reaching AAA. He was drafted in the first round of the 1975 January draft, the 7th overall pick; four of the six picked before him would wind up in the majors. He began his career in 1975 with the Great Falls Giants, going 10-0 with a 2.30 ERA in 14 games, leading the Pioneer League in wins, finishing second to Alan Wirth in strikeouts (81 to 90), placing second to Carlos Perez in ERA and making the circuit's All-Star team (Perez was the other hurler taken).

He was not nearly as sharp his second year, going 6-8 with a 4.41 ERA for the Lafayette Drillers. In 1977, the right-hander was 6-10 with a 6.03 ERA with the Waterbury Giants, tying for 8th in the Eastern League in defeats. He improved to 9-5, 3.71 in a return engagement with Waterbury in 1978. He spent most of his final season at the AAA level, going 6-12 with a 5.53 ERA in 24 outings for the Phoenix Giants in 1979. He tied for eighth in the 1979 Pacific Coast League in defeats; the four pitchers he tied with would all appear in the majors. For his pro career, he was 37-35, 4.35.
