Originally selected by the San Francisco Giants in the third round of the 1974 amateur draft, Wirth made his pro debut that summer with the Great Falls Giants. Pitching for Great Falls again the next year, he went 8-5 with a 3.09 ERA in 14 starts and led the 1975 Pioneer League with 90 strikeouts. He went 15-5 with a 2.87 ERA in 27 starts for the AA Waterbury Giants in 1977.

Prior to the 1978 season, Wirth was traded to A's as part of a seven-player deal for Vida Blue. He began the season in the Oakland rotation, going 2-4 with a 3.67 ERA in 10 starts through the beginning of June, when he was sent down to AAA. Back in the majors in September, he ended the year with a 5-6 mark and 3.43 ERA in 16 outings. He split the next two seasons between Oakland and the AAA Ogden A's. He later played in the Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles, and Detroit Tigers organizations, ending his career in 1982.

Wirth's daughter Christina briefly played pro basketball in the WNBA with the Indiana Fever.
