Biographical Information[edit]

Gary Denbo was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 17th round of the 1983 amateur draft and played four years in the minor leagues, reaching AA in 1986, before becoming a minor league coach and manager. He was a player/coach with the Vermont Reds in 1986, coach with the Tampa Tarpons in 1987, Cedar Rapids Reds in 1988, Columbus Clippers in 1991, Greensboro Hornets in 1993, Albany-Colonie Yankees in 1994, and Norwich Navigators in 1996.

Denbo was the major league hitting coach with the 2001 AL champion New York Yankees. He was hitting coach for the 2008 Toronto Blue Jays but was fired on May 20th, alongside manager John Gibbons and two other coaches. The Blue Jays had fallen to last place in the AL East and were experiencing serious problems scoring runs in spite of an excellent team on-base percentage; the Jays were also on a pace to set a season record for grounding into double plays. He was replaced by Gene Tenace. Denbo has won championships as a player or a coach at every level of professional baseball.

He later scouted for the New York Yankees and rose to Vice-President of player development at a time when the Yankees' farm system was among the most productive in baseball. In October of 2017, he was one of the first persons hired by new Miami Marlins President Derek Jeter, who knew him well from his days with the Yankees, to be in charge of player development and amateur scouting.
