Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Garrett Acton was drafted in the 35th round of the 2016 amateur draft, by the Chicago White Sox, but declined their offer in order to go to college. He played one season at St. Louis University, then transferred to the University of Illinois where he played in 2019 and 2020. He was one of the players victimized by the 2020 amateur draft being reduced to just five rounds by the COVID-19 pandemic, as he would normally have been expected to be drafted around the 10th round or so. He had to make the choice of whether to return to college for an unplanned additional season, or sign for a minimal bonus in order to turn pro. He took the second route, inking a deal with the Oakland Athletics on June 29, 2020, as an undrafted free agent.

In spite of being signed, he still couldn't get his career started as there was no minor league baseball being played at the time. He had to wait until the spring of 2021 to make his first professional appearances, splitting the year between the Stockton Ports of the Low-A West and the Lansing Lugnuts of High-A Central. His combined mark was 3-0, 3.69 in 34 games as a reliever with 2 saves and an excellent 87 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings. He continued his quick rise through the A's system in 2022, pitching at AA with the Midland RockHounds and AAA with the Las Vegas Aviators and going 3-9, 5.01 in 51 games. He got off to a fast start with Las Vegas in 2023, going 5-1 with 1 save and an ERA of 4.01 in his first 16 appearances. That earned him a call-up to Oakland, where the pitching staff was struggling big time, on May 14th. Making his debut the same day in relief of starter JP Sears against the Texas Rangers, he pitched 1 2/3 hitless and scoreless innings while recording a pair of strikeouts.
