Mun-jong Hong played in the Korea Baseball Organization for 7 years and Nippon Professional Baseball for 4 years.
Hong was drafted by the Taiheiyo Club Lions in the second round of the 1976 NPB draft, and he was 0-for-21 in 1977. He only got 21 at-bats combined in the next six seasons, and he was released after the 1983 season. Hong then joined the Lotte Giants of the KBO, and he hit .339/.416/.539 with 11 homers and 36 steals in 1984. He led the league in hits, doubles and runs, ranked 2nd in batting (.001 behind Man-soo Lee), 2nd in steals (tied with Hae-chang Lee), 2nd in triples (1 behind In-sik Kim), 9th in homers (tied with Doo-yeol Yoo) and 4th in RBI (tied with Yong-hee Kim). He also won a KBO Gold Glove as an outfielder. He had a chance to grab the batting title from Lee, but the Samsung Lions decided to walk him for 9 straight plate appearances, and Lee won the triple crown.
The Osaka native crushed 11 homers with a .260/.328/.412 batting line in 1985, and he was 4th in RBI (tied with Kyeong-sik Shin). He then hit .274/.349/.364 with 39 steals in 1986, and he was 2nd in steals (4 behind Jung-hwan Seo). Hong recorded 25 steals with a .287/.356/.402 batting line in 1987, ranking 2nd in runs (7 behind Gwang-eun Lee), 5th in hits (between Young-chul Kim and Jae-bak Kim) and 3rd in steals (tied with Kyu-ok Heo). He stole 22 bases with a .279/.352/.376 batting line in 1988, then he slumped to .242/.314/.344 in 1989. Hong played 74 games with a .235/.363/.296 batting line in 1990, then he announced his retirement.
Overall, Hong hit .276/.353/.398 with 672 hits, 161 steals and 43 homers in 7 seasons in the KBO.
