Biographical Information[edit]

Fumihiro Tojo played in the Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years and once led the league in steals .

Tojo was signed by the Nankai Hawks in 1963, but he spent the first three seasons in the NPB Farm Leagues, only playing 14 games with the big club in 1965. The Hawks then traded him with Muto Shiro to the Sankei Atoms for cash after the 1965 season. Tojo gained some chances after being traded, as he played 91 games with a .207/.270/.245 batting line in 1966. However, even though he was a shortstop, his batting was too poor so he couldn't get many at-bats. He only hit .192/.213/.250 in 1967, then recorded a .159/.275/.182 batting line in 1968.

When Akio Saionji was injured in 1968, Tojo broke out and secured the leadoff and shortstop spots. He batted .320/.381/.425 with 3 homers and 13 steals in 313 at-bats. The Kagoshima native was unable to extend his solid batting in the next season, but still led the league in steals with 28 and hit .249/.296/.313. Tojo was still the everyday shortstop for the Atoms in the next three seasons, when he hit .223/.277/.277, .243/.288/.312 and .224/.274/.283 respectively. When Yasunori Nagao shined in 1974, Tojo lost his spot as he only hit .226/.284/.274. The Yakult Swallows then traded him to the Lotte Orions. Tojo had a .222/.263/.311 batting line in 68 games with the Orions, then announced his retirement after the 1975 season.

Overall, Tojo had hit .237/.289/.301 with 108 steals and 624 hits in 11 seasons in NPB.
