Biographical Information[edit]

Fred Spurgeon played four seasons in the majors for the Cleveland Indians. In 1926 he was third in the league in at-bats and first in sacrifice hits.

Spurgeon also played in the minors, perhaps most notably with the 1929 Kansas City Blues, a team which won 111 games. The book Baseball in Springfield has a photo of him as a member of the 1932 Springfield Cardinals.

He was one of the umpires for the 1948 College World Series, a Series in which George H.W. Bush participated.
