Biographical Information[edit]
Fred Wigington pitched four games for the 1923 St. Louis Cardinals with a pretty good ERA of 3. 24. The team's ERA that year was 3.87. However, Fred's WHIP was 1.920, which might have caused the team not to keep him the following year. He also pitched three seasons in the minors, accumulating 51 victories during those three years.
Being from Nebraska, he started his pro career with two Nebraska teams, the Omaha Buffaloes and the Hastings Cubs.
While with the Cardinals, he was two years younger than teammate Rogers Hornsby and two years older than teammate Jim Bottomley.
No other major leaguer through 2019 has had the last name Wigington, although Ty Wigginton came fairly close.
He died in 1980 in Mesa, AZ. The following year Sammy Byrd also died there.
