Biographical Information

Fred Treacey played baseball prior to the first professional league, then played in the first pro league (the National Association), and then played one year in the new National League.

He was with the amateur Chicago White Stockings before the National Association started, and played for them in 1871 when the new league began. He is remembered for being one of the players who tied for the league home run lead with four.

His brother Pete Treacey joined him briefly on the New York Mutuals in 1876, the first season of the National League.

Fred, an outfielder, had his best year in 1871. After that, his hitting was below average, and he moved around among various teams, never playing more than one year in a row for the same team - although he did play for three different teams in Philadelphia, and played twice for the White Stockings and the Philadelphia Whites.

He was the center fielder for the Brooklyn Eckfords in 1869, and the book When Johnny Came Sliding Home says he was elected a member of the Brooklyn Atlantics but jumped to Chicago. He umpired 4 games in the National Association between 1871 and 1875.
