When Johnny Came Sliding Home, sub-titled "The Post Civil War Baseball Boom, 1865-70" and originally published in 1998, is a source of information about the days prior to the first professional league. Among other things, it gives rosters for the teams of the period.

The book was written by William J. Ryczek, who previously wrote "Blackguards and Red Stockings: A History of Baseball's National Association, 1871-1875", an important book about the National Association.
