Biographical Information

North Dakota native Floyd Stromme spent eleven active seasons in professional baseball from 1936 to 1946. He was signed as an amateur free agent before the 1936 season by the Cleveland Indians and assigned to the Fargo-Moorhead Twins team of the class D Northern League in 1936. He appeared in just 11 games his first season, went 2-4 with a 3.33 ERA and was back with the same outfit for the 1937 year and had his winningest year while in pro baseball with a 19-6 record and league-leading 2.10 ERA while pitching 223 innings. Floyd was also chosen for the league's All-Star team.

Stromme was with the New Orleans Pelicans of the Southern Association in 1938 and fell to a 9-10 record with a 4.01 ERA but popped back with the same team in 1939 and was 11-7 with a 3.45 ERA by mid-year. He made his debut with the Cleveland Indians on July 5, 1939. Floyd appeared in 5 games that season, pitching 13 innings with a 4.85 ERA and lost his only decision, pitching his final game in the big leagues on September 19th.

Stromme was granted free agency in 1940 and spent a split season with the Buffalo Bisons and the Baltimore Orioles of the International League building a 12-11 record and a 3.88 ERA in 30 games while pitching 181 innings. The right-hander never got back to the big leagues and spent the rest of his career (1941-1946) in the high minor leagues.

Stromme had two more double-digit win seasons, going 11-11 for the Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League in 1944 and went 16-13 for the same team in 1945. No offers arose and Floyd called it a career in 1946 at the age of 29. This ended Stromme's minor league run and he finished his eleven-year pro career with a 95-82 record and a 3.71 ERA while appearing in 285 games and pitching 1,470 innings.

After baseball, Floyd worked for several years for Georgia Pacific at Coos Bay, OR, retiring in 1977. He died after a brief illness on February 7, 1993 at the Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, WA. Floyd Marvin Stromme was 76 years old.
