Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Fernando Perez began playing in the minor leagues in 2011 after being signed by the Detroit Tigers as an international amateur free agent from the Dominican Republic on June 12, 2011. He played one season for the DSL Tigers before moving to the United States and playing two seaons for the GCL Tigers in 2012 and 2013. Used as a starter, he went 5-4, 4.24 the first year and 5-2, 3.23 the second. In 2014, he was 6-4, 3.63 in 14 starts for the Connecticut Tigers of the New York-Penn League.

Moving to full season ball, he played two seasons for the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Midwest League in 2015 and 2016. The first year was a bit rough, as he finished at 2-12, 4.51, and in 2016, his win/loss record improved to 4-7, but his ERA shot up to 5.53. He gave up more hits than innings pitched both seasons, with unimpressive strikeout numbers. Still, the Tigers kept him on board and he returned to West Michigan at the start of 2017, but this time as a reliever. He posted a 2.84 ERA in his first 5 games and was promoted to the Lakeland Flying Tigers of the Florida State League at the end of April, where he continued to do well. His ERA was 1.79 in 26 games and he struck out 49 batters in 50 1/3 innings. He had another good season for Lakeland in 2018, going 5-1, 2.95 in 29 games, but that came after a disastrous couple of weeks in AA, where he allowed 14 runs in 11 2/3 innings for the Erie Sea Wolves of the Eastern League.

In 2019, he pitched just 4 times for Erie, but was roughed up again, giving up 9 runs on 15 hits in 6 1/3 innings. He spent time in extended spring training, then went on the injured list in mid May and never returned. He became a free agent after that season and had not found a team when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the following spring, forcing him to sit out the season. He would not return to summer ball for a number of years after that, instead playing winter ball in the Colombian Winter League with the Caimanes de Barranquilla and Vaqueros de Monteria. He pitched in the 2022 Caribbean Series for the Caimanes, and in the 2024 Caribbean Series with Federales de Chiriqui, who represented the Panamanian League. He did well enough in these various roles that in 2024, he was signed by the Rieleros de Aguascalientes of the Mexican League. However, things did not go well as he went 1-2 with a 7.07 ERA in 9 starts.
