Biographical Information

Fermin Ubri peaked at AA as a player. He remained in baseball for decades in other capacities.

He debuted in 1981 and hit .297/.341/.370 for the Shelby Mets, fielding .935 at 2B. He was 9th in the South Atlantic League in average, between Trench Davis and Greg Gagne. Despite his good average (albeit without much else), he did not make the SAL All-Star team as Garry Harris was picked at 2B. In 1982, Ubri batted .261/.302/.287 for the Lynchburg Mets with 28 steals in 36 tries, but only had 9 extra-base hits (7 2B, 2 3B) in 429 at-bats. He tied for 10th in the Carolina League in steals and edged Steven Garcia for the best fielding percentage at 2B, .9658 to .9655.

Fermin returned to Lynchburg in 1983 and hit .267/.307/.341 with 65 runs (after 63 in both 1981-1982) and 66 RBI. The star-studded team (Dwight Gooden, Lenny Dykstra, Randy Milligan, Mark Carreon) easily won the pennant. He again led the league in fielding percentage at 2B (.970) and was named the league's All-Star second baseman. He ended his playing career in 1984, hitting .236/.259/.304 and fielded .976 for the Jackson Mets.

He has managed the DSL Cubs/Padres (1994), DSL White Sox 1 (2008) and DSL White Sox (2010-2011) and very possibly other DSL teams. He also has been a scout for the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago White Sox, signing Valerio De Los Santos.
