Biographical Information[edit]
Evelio Ovalles pitched for the Venezuelan national team. In the 1973 FIBA Amateur World Series, he led all pitchers with 27 innings pitched and tied Luis Barreiro and Julio Romero of Cuba for the most wins at 3-0. He played a big role in helping Venezuela win the Bronze Medal. He was back with Venezuela in the 1974 Central American and Caribbean Games, going 1-0 with a 2.12 ERA (beating Puerto Rico) and 2 for 8 at the plate with a double, walk, run and two RBI. He also helped Venezuela to a Bronze in the 1975 Pan American Games. He pitched for Venezuela in the 1979 Pan American Games, 1980 Amateur World Series and 1983 Pan American Games.
His sons Homy Ovalles and Juan Ovalles both played pro ball as well. Evelio later became an orchestra leader.
