Biographical Information[edit]

Evan Mendoza has played as high as AAA and has been on the Colombian national team.

He was 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA as a freshman at NC State, going 0-for-3 at the plate. Moving off the mound in 2016, he batted .362/.417/.449 with 33 RBI in 55 games. In the Cape Cod League that summer, he hit .315/.368/.389 for the Bourne Braves. As a junior, he fell to .262/.342/.397. The St. Louis Cardinals took him in the 11th round of the 2017 amateur draft, one pick after JP Sears, and he signed for a $150,000 bonus, as much as their second-round selection (Kramer Robertson).

His first summer as a pro, he hit .370/.431/.549 in 41 games for the State College Spikes and .270/.286/.419 in 18 for the Peoria Chiefs. He won the New York-Penn League batting title by .052 ahead of Ben Breazeale. [1] In '18, he appeared for the Palm Beach Cardinals (.349/.394/.456 in 37 G) and Springfield (MO) Cardinals (.282/.338/.373 in 98 G). He fielded .961 at the hot corner between the two stops. His 145 hits were third in the Cards chain behind Tommy Edman and Elehuris Montero.

In 2019, he was with Springfield (.248/.291/.311 in 54 G) and the Memphis Redbirds (5 for 16, HR, 3 BB in 6 G). The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 2021 Caribbean Series, he played mostly short for the Caimanes de Barranquilla and hit .263/.333/.263. Playing short again with Memphis in 2021, he hit .242/.305/.290 and stole 15 bases in 21 tries. He returned in '22 and batted .247/.348/.325 with 17 swipes in 21 attempts while splitting time between short and second primarily. The San Diego Padres took him in the AAA portion of the 2022 Rule V Draft. [2] He was then on the Colombian roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic, one of three US-born players on the Colombian roster alongside Oscar Mercado and Rio Gomez. [3]
