Biographical Information

Ernie Walker was the brother of Ewart "Dixie" Walker and uncle of Harry "The Hat" Walker and Fred "Dixie" Walker. Until the Hairstons arrived, the Walkers were the only set of major-leaguers to have two generations in a row of brothers.

Ernie tied Tilly Walker for the highest batting average on the 1914 Browns.

Ernie was born in Blossburg, AL, northwest of Birmingham, AL. By 1912 he was playing for the team in Montgomery, AL, and he came to the majors in April 1913 with the 1913 St. Louis Browns. He spent most of 1913 back with Montgomery, but returned to the Browns for 1914-15, getting over 100 at-bats each year.

Branch Rickey was his manager in 1914-15 with the Browns. Ernie made his last major league appearance around a week after George Sisler made his major league debut with the team. Sisler and Walker were a couple of the eight Browns players who appeared at least 10 times in right field for the 1915 Browns.

After 1915 Ernie played for several more seasons in the minors. He hit .353 in the Western League in 1919 and was a teammate of Kiki Cuyler and George Pipgras with Charleston in 1922. Cuyler hit .309 at age 23 with Charleston while Ernie hit .327 at age 31.
