Biographical Information

Eric McQueen played for three seasons in the minors then became a scout.

Amateur Career

McQueen was taken in the 14th round of the 1995 amateur draft as a catcher by the New York Mets. He went on to college instead of signing with New York. As a freshman, he hit .255 as a backup backstop for Georgia Tech. In 1997, he became their starter and batted .316. He was one of the better catchers in the Atlantic Coast Conference but was no match for the All-ACC pick, Matt LeCroy of Clemson. As a junior in '98, McQueen fell to .298 but clubbed a team-best 15 homers as Georgia Tech finished 19th in NCAA Division I. Jeremy Salazar was the All-Conference pick this time. In 1999, the Tennessee native hit .315 with 11 HR. He again went in the 14th round of the draft, this time to the Colorado Rockies.

Professional Career

Assigned to the Portland Rockies, he threw out 31% of attempted base-stealers while hitting .255/.308/.340 with 52 whiffs in 153 at-bats and only one home run. He led Northwest League backstops in both putouts (347) and double plays (7). With the 2000 Asheville Tourists, he produced at a .201/.260/.344 clip with 76 whiffs in 209 at-bats and 6 homers, backing up Jeff Winchester. He ended his playing career by going 0 for 5 with a walk and 5 strikeouts for the 2001 Salem Avalanche.

After his playing career

Eric coached youth baseball in the Atlanta, GA area after his playing career ended. He was volunteer coach at Kennesaw State University in 2008-2009 then became Director of Baseball Operations at the University of Tennessee. He later became a Toronto Blue Jays scout. He was assigned to covering Deck McGuire, a fellow Georgia Tech player, who would become a first-round pick. He also signed Chuck Ghysels and Chris Hawkins.
