Biographical Information[edit]
Elmer Tutwiler was a a pitcher eight years (1925-1932), all in the minors except for a cup of coffee in 1928. Tutwiler was born on November 19, 1904, in Carbon Hill, AL. He broke into Organized Baseball in 1925 at age 20 with Laurel in the Cotton States League. He pitched for Laurel (1925-1926); Pensacola in the Southeastern League (1927); and Selma - Jacksonville in the Southeastern League (1928).
Tutwiler was 23 years old when he broke into the big leagues on August 20, 1928, with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched two games in relief, finishing one with no decisions, striking out one and walking none in 3⅔ innings with an ERA of 4.06 and a WHIP of 1.091. He played his final MLB game on September 27, 1928 at age 23.
He returned to the minors with Omaha in the Western League (1929-1930); St. Joseph in the Western League (1930-1931); Omaha in 1931; and St. Joseph (1932); ending his baseball playing career at age 27. In 1929, his best year in the minors, he was (16-14). Overall in the minors, he was (72-69).
He was a U.S. Marine Corps PFC during World War II (VA). He died at age 71 at a VA Hospital in Pensacola, FL on May 3, 1976 and is buried at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, FL.
