Biographical Information[edit]
Eli Morgan had a rough major league debut. Facing the Toronto Blue Jays as the Cleveland Indians' starting pitcher on a cold, wet and blustery night at Progressive Field on May 28, 2021, he was hit hard. After a perfect 1st inning, he allowed 2 runs in the 2nd and another 4 in the 3rd before being lifted in favor of Phil Maton after 2 2/3 innings. In addition to the 6 runs, he gave up 8 hits, including 3 doubles and a two-run homer by Joe Panik, and was charged with his team's 11-2 loss. He pitched better after that, finishing his rookie season at 5-7, 5.34 in 18 starts and 89 1/3 innings.
In 2022, with the team renamed the Cleveland Guardians, he pitched 50 times, all but once out of the bullpen, and went 5-3, 3.38, with an excellent K/W ratio of 72/13 in 66 2/3 innings. He also pitched 3 times in the postseason, for a total of 3 1/3 innings, allowing just 1 run and receiving credit for Cleveland's 6-5 win over the New York Yankees in Game 3 of the Division Series on October 15th. In 2023, all 61 of his outings came in relief as he went 5-2, 4.01 in 67 1/3 innings. He was then limited to 32 games in 2024, but still went 3-0, 1.93 as part of the best bullpen in the majors. He returned to the postseason that year, making 3 outings each in the Division Series and the ALCS, for a total of four innings. On November 20th, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs in return for outfield prospect Alfonsin Rosario. Until that trade, he had only known one organization during his career, having been drafted by Cleveland in the 8th round of the 2017 amateur draft out of Gonzaga University.
