Biographical Information[edit]
Eddie Menchaca has been a minor league player, coach and manager.
Menchaca was drafted out of high school by the Seattle Mariners in the 36th round of the 1999 amateur draft, but continued on to junior college. After two years at South Mountain Community College, the Mariners signed him. He hit .272/.306/.335 for the 2001 AZL Mariners and fielded .930 at short; he was also 0 for 5 with a walk for the Everett AquaSox. Eddie batted .215/.265/.245 as a floating utility infielder who appeared for five different Mariners affiliates in 2002, ranging from A to AAA.
In 2003, the Texan batted .230/.268/.266 as starting shortstop for the Inland Empire 66ers, but fielded .970. He also threw two shutout innings. He led California League shortstops in fielding percentage and Baseball America rated him as the best defensive shortstop in the circuit. The next year, Eddie put up a .212/.252/.267 line for the San Antonio Missions. The good-glove, light-hitting player batted .226/.274/.248 as a utility infielder for the 2005 Missions.
Menchaca coached hitters for the 2008 High Desert Mavericks. He was originally assigned to the Clinton Lumberkings for 2009, but got reassigned to either the Pulaski Mariners or Everett AquaSox as Jesus Azuaje replaced him in Clinton. Eddie then became a manager at age 29, guiding Pulaski to the playoffs in 2010. After several years of managing, he was a coach for the Arkansas Travelers in 2017 to complete the Mariners phase of his coaching career.
The Oakland Athletics hired Menchaca in 2018 and he managed at the Arizona League level for two years. He was slated to return to the AZL Athletics Green in 2020 before the minor league season was cancelled due to COVID-19. In addition to managing, Menchaca was the A's Supervisor of Latin America Player Development in 2019-2020 and Latin America Field Coordinator in 2021-2022.
Menchaca left the A's organization after the 2022 season. He spent at least parts of 2023 and early 2024 as an assistant coach with the Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes.
In 2024 Menchaca joined the Los Angeles Angels as a hitting coach for the ACL Angels.
