Biographical Information[edit]
Ed Sixsmith at age 21 caught three innings of one major league game with the Philadelphia Quakers in 1884. He allowed five passed balls, but to be fair to him, he was catching a young pitcher making his own major league debut, and Con Murphy had his own problems that day.
Ed continued to play in the minors through 1888, mostly at catcher but sometimes in the outfield.
"At Philadelphia Sept. 11 the home club put in a new pitcher named Murphy, formerly of the Trenton and Domestic clubs and he proved a picnic for the sluggers from Chicago. To make matters worse for the Phillies Depanger (sic), in the third inning had his hand injured and was compelled to retire. Sixsmith, the catcher of the Franklin amateurs, was then placed behind the bat but he could not handle Murphy's delivery." - Sporting Life, September 17, 1884 issue
