Biographical Information

Ed Short served as General Manager of the Chicago White Sox for nearly a decade.

Following World War II, Short was the sports director at WJJD, the radio station that broadcast Sox games. He was offered the job of public relations director in 1950 and later served as the team's traveling secretary. He was promoted to GM in 1961 by new owner Art Allyn. During his time at the helm of the club, he traded away fading stars Nellie Fox, Billy Pierce, and Minnie Minoso and acquired players including Tommy John, Hoyt Wilhelm, Tommie Agee, and Wilbur Wood. However, the team's fortunes declined in the late 1960s, and Short was fired on September 1, 1970.
