Biographical Information

Ed Poole played five years in the majors. While mainly a pitcher most years, in 1901 he appeared more often as a position player than as a pitcher. His best year (as a pitcher) was 1902, when he went 12-4 for a Cincinnati Reds team which was 70-70. His ERA that year was seventh in the 1902 National League.

Poole was born in 1874 in Canton, OH, 60 miles south of Cleveland and 90 miles west of Pittsburgh. Ed Gremminger was born the same year in Canton. Poole pitched mostly in the Interstate League before coming to the majors. He won 20 for Wheeling in 1900, and came up in October 1900 to the majors for one game as pitcher, which he won, and one game as an outfielder (he hit .500 in the two games). After going 5-4 in 1901 (along with playing outfield and other positions), and starting 1902 with the Pirates, he was sold to the 1902 Reds, for whom he went 12-4. He went 7-13 for the Reds in 1903 and was sold to the 1904 Brooklyn Superbas, for whom he was 8-14.

Back in the minors in 1905, he won 20 games for Providence. He had two more good years in the minors before finishing out his minor league career in 1908.
