Biographical Information[edit]

Ed Musial was a minor league outfielder five years (1941-1950), losing four years to the Military and was inactive in 1949. He was born the second son and youngest of six children to Lukasz Musial, a Polish Immigrant and zinc mine worker and Mary Lancos who had Slovakian immigrant grandparents.

He was born in Donora, PA (also the hometown of Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey, Jr.). His older brother, Stan Musial, is a household name in the U.S. and Poland, and his nephew, Dick Musial, was a track star at Notre Dame. He graduated from high school in his hometown, where he excelled at football and baseball, and then attended Army, where he was a football star. He married Edith J. Bartoletti, who preceded him in death on April 25, 2002 and had two daughters, Diane Taylor of Girard OH and Karen Zemba of South Fayette Township PA and one son Edward S. Musial, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre in World War II (1942-1945) (KOM). Like his brother, Ed started as a pitcher and converted to the outfield. He started in 1941 with Oshkosh in the Wisconsin State League (0-7). After the War he converted to the outfield and split 1946 with Fayetteville in the Coastal Plain League (.334), Richmond in the Ohio State League (.325) and Shelby in the Tri-State League. In 1947 he was with Rocky Mount in the Coastal Plain League (.316). In 1948 he was with Harrisburg in the Inter-State League (.219) and Stamford in the Colonial League (.316). He finished his career in 1950 with Poughkeepsie-Torrington of the Colonial League (.288) and Waycross in the Georgia-Florida League (.275), In all he played 469 games with 23 homeruns, 188 runs batted in, 67 stolen bases and (.300/.401/.414). for an OPS of .815.

Later he worked for the Westinghouse Electric Company in East Pittsburgh, PA and was very active in youth baseball. He died December 10, 2003 at age 81 in Monongahela PA from a lung operation (he had had lung cancer).
