Biographical Information

Believed to be 25 thanks to some generous baseball age shaving, 30-year-old Ed Coleman had a dandy of a big league trial in 1932, batting .342/.351/.507 in a 26-game look for Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics. Thinking Ed could step in as a regular, Mack moved Hall of Famer Al Simmons to the Chicago White Sox to free up some room. Ed proved a solid .280 hitter, even belting 3 home runs in a game in 1934, but was not nearly as productive as "Bucketfoot Al". He moved to the St. Louis Browns in 1935. In his final season, 1936, he led the American League in pinch hits and at-bats as a pinch-hitter, going 20-for-62 (.323) as part of an overall .292/.366/.431.

Coleman's brother Ralph Coleman was head coach at Oregon State University for 35 years [1].
