Biographical Information[edit]
Dustin Yount was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 9th round of the 2001 draft. Signed by scout Jeff Morris, Yount was assigned to the GCL Orioles following the draft and batted .228/.333/.379 with 3 HR's and 18 RBI in 44 games. In 2002, Yount was promoted to the Bluefield Orioles, where he batted .241/.350/.493 with 14 HR's and 51 RBI. The Bluefield first baseman tied for second in the Appalachian League in home runs, four behind leader Wes Bankston.
The Orioles promoted Yount to the A Delmarva Shorebirds in 2003, where he batted .222/.309/.327 with 8 HR's and 49 RBI, striking out 115 times in 419 AB in his first full season. Yount remained with Delmarva in 2004, and batted .257/.378/.416 with 8 HR's and 59 RBI and cut his strikeout total to 80. He also led South Atlantic League first basemen with 24 errors.
The Orioles promoted Yount to the A Frederick Keys in 2005, where he batted .258/.372/.405 with 12 HRs and 52 RBI. He struck out 102 times in 368 AB, while drawing 60 walks. His 784 put-outs led Carolina League first basemen.
Yount began the 2006 season with Frederick, improving on his 2005 season, batting .272/.395/.418 with 7 HR's, 43 walks and 30 RBI in 67 games and was promoted to the AA Bowie Baysox on June 22. However, Yount struggled in 54 games with Bowie, batting .228/.323/.347 with 5 HR's and 20 RBI. Also his strikeouts rose to 52 and walks dropped to 25.
Yount saw his first taste of spring training in 2007, appearing in 2 games, going 0-2. He was assigned to Frederick to begin the season, but struggled batting just .030/.154/.061 with 0 HR's and 1 RBI in 13 games and 33 AB's and was released by the Orioles on April 27. Yount moved to independent baseball, joining the St. Joe Blacksnakes of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. He batted .280/.376/.405 with six homers and 50 RBI in 82 games.
In 2008, Yount signed with the Lincoln Saltdogs in the American Association, and recorded his best year as a professional to date. He batted .309/.398/.446 with eight home runs and 69 RBI in 91 games, earning his first-ever appearance in a minor league All-Star game. Yount led his team in hits, total bases, RBI and walks.
Dustin is the son of the longtime Milwaukee Brewers Hall of Fame shortstop/outfielder Robin Yount. His cousins are Austin Yount, Cody Yount and Mackenzie Vandergeest, and his uncle is Larry Yount.
