Biographical Information[edit]

Durwood Merrill began his career in the California League in 1972. He then moved to the Texas League in 1973-1974 and the American Association from 1974 to 1976. He became a major league umpire in the American League in 1977, after having worked a few games in 1976 and was active for 24 seasons, until 1999. He worked the 1988 World Series and the 1985 and 1995 All-Star Games. He was one of the umpires whose career ended because of the failed mass resignation scheme by the Major League Umpires Association in 1999; when the issue was resolved a couple of years later, he chose to retire rather than return as an active umpire and passed away shortly afterwards.
