Biographical Information

Duane Dewey played six years in the minors and was on a major league roster for two weeks but never played a game in The Show.

Dewey was picked by the Chicago White Sox in both the January and June rounds of the 1978 amateur draft but did not sign. The Kansas City Royals took him in the first round of the secondary phase of the 1979 amateur draft, the 20th pick.

He debuted with the GCL Royals Blue (.237/~.384/.390 in 23 games) and Ft. Myers Royals (2 for 23, 2 BB, 11 K). In 1980, he played for Fort Myers, sharing catching duties with Don Slaught and one another player. He hit .207/~.358/.264. He returned to Fort Myers in 1981 and batted .231/~.346/.307 as the regular backstop.

He split 1982 between the Jacksonville Suns (.301/~.425/.473 in 32 games) and Omaha Royals (.220/~.278/.480 in 20 games). In 1983, he hit only .156/~.259/.222 in 58 games for Jacksonville and .206/~.231/.222 in 25 for Omaha.

Dewey was on the active roster of the Kansas City Royals from May 16-June 1, 1983 but never appeared in an official game. He was called up when Don Slaught was put on the disabled list. He joins Russ Stephans as backup catchers who spent time on the roster, but never appeared in a game for the 1983 Royals. John Wathan was the starter.

On December 8, 1983, Dewey was traded by the Royals with Mike Armstrong to the New York Yankees for Steve Balboni and Roger Erickson. In 1984, he finished his career with the Nashville Sounds, going 1 for 2 with a walk, run and RBI.
