Biographical Information[edit]
Doo-yeol Yoo played in the Korea Baseball Organization for 9 years. His son Jae-sin Yoo also played in the KBO.
Yoo played for the South Korean national team in the 1980 Amateur World Series, 1981 World Games, 1981 Intercontinental Cup and 1982 Amateur World Series. The Lotte Giants selected him in the first round of the 1983 KBO draft, and he hit .307/.394/.461 with 9 homers in his first season. He was 5th in batting, between Jong-hoon Park and Seung-gwan Yang. Yoo then slumped to .230/.306/.390 with 11 homers in 1984, and he was 2-for-20 in the 1984 Korean Series before the 8th inning of Game 7. Facing Hisao Niura, Yoo hit a game-winning, go-ahead 3-run home run, and he was named the Korean Series MVP.
The Changwon native bounced back in 1985, and he crushed a career-high 13 homers with a .287/.384/.483 batting line. He tied Seong-rae Kim and Ba-wi Kim for 7th in homers. Yoo then struggled again in 1986 as his batting line fell to .239/.331/.328, and he never hit more than 10 homers in a season in the rest of his career. Yoo's batting line was .299/.362/.432 in 1987, and he hit .281/.348/.384 in 99 games in 1988. He slumped to .187/.286/.269 in 1989, and he had a .206/.366/.327 batting line in 1990. Yoo played 89 games with 7 homers and a .262/.333/.399 batting line, then he announced his retirement. He was the fielding coach of the Giants from 1993 to 1997, the batting coach from 1998 to 1999 and the batting coach of the Hanwha Eagles' minor league team from 2003 to 2004. He also coached Gunsan Sangil High School in 2006, Gimhae High School from 2007 to 2008, Seorak High School in 2009, Chunghun High School in 2012 and Cheongju High School in 2014.
Overall, Yoo hit .264/.350/.401 with 588 hits and 58 homers in 9 seasons in the KBO.
