Biographical Information

Pitcher Doris Barr played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1943 to 1950, winning 76 games with six clubs during her career.

Barr debuted in the AAGPBL's first season, 1943, going 15-13 with a 2.90 ERA for the South Bend Blue Sox. She allowed 199 hits in 254 innings but walked 151. She hit .269 at the plate, occasionally playing the outfield. She tied for 9th in the circuit in average, was 6th in ERA, 6th in wins, 7th in complete games (22) and 7th in innings.

In 1944, Doris fell to 8-11, 2.98 with 141 walks in 148 innings; she only gave up 72 hits. She split 1945 between South Bend and the Racine Belles, with a composite 20-8, 1.71 record in her career year. She gave up only 144 hits in 252 innings while still walking plenty (168). She She was 8th in the league in ERA, 6th in victories, third in winning percentage (behind Connie Wisniewski and Dottie Wiltse) and was 6th in strikeouts.

The southpaw was just 6-9 with a 3.83 ERA for Racine in 1946 with 109 walks in 119 innings. She allowed two runs in two postseason innings as her club went on to the title. In 1947, the Minnesota native was 14-12 with a 2.26 ERA and 144 hits in 219 innings. For the first time, she fell under 100 walks with 91. She was 9th in the circuit with 96 strikeouts. In the postseason, she had Racine's lone first-round loss to the Muskegon Lassies (7 R in 6 IP); in the finals, she pitched just four innings, allowing two runs, as Anna May Hutchison and Joanne Winter pitched 64 of their 68 postseason innings that year.

Barr was 7-19 with a 2.68 ERA for the Springfield Sallies of 1948, getting roughed up with a last-place expansion club; she hit .230. In 1949, the veteran hurler posted a 8-13, 2.40 record for Muskegon, her fourth club. She was 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA in the playoffs.

In her final campaign, 1950, Doris was only 1-11 with a 6.51 ERA for the Peoria Redwings and Kalamazoo Lassies. Overall, she had gone 79-96 with a 2.80 ERA in the regular season, allowing 1,021 hits but 959 walks in 1,474 innings.

After her baseball days, Barr was an accountant at a hospital. She died in 2009 at age 88.
