Biographical Information[edit]
Dionisio Acosta played in Venezuela, the US and Mexico and later was a union leader.
Acosta was 0 for 1 for the Navegantes del Magallanes in the 1951 Caribbean Series, backing up Ken Staples at catcher. [1] He was with the Venezuelan national team that won Silver in the 1953 Amateur World Series. [2] Signing with the Baltimore Orioles, he split 1955 between the Thetford Mines Miners (4 for 19) and Paris Orioles (.210/.269/.280 in 26 G).
In the 1957 Caribbean Series, he was 0 for 1 for the Leones del Caracas, backing up Johnny Roseboro. [3] He got a taste of AAA in 1958 with the Havana Sugar Kings, whose starting catcher was Hank Izquierdo. Acosta was only 3-for-35 with 5 walks and a double. He was 9 for 31 with two doubles and a walk for the 1963 Mexico City Tigers. [4]
During 13 Venezuelan League seasons, he hit .220. [5] He became head of the Association of Professional Baseball Players of Venezuela in 1967 and ran the organization for 24 years, leading a strike in 1973-1974. [6] He also ran the union for the Caribbean players. [7] His work off the field is the reason he made both the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame [8] and the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame. [9]
