Dick Shirt played for New South Wales in the Claxton Shield in 1964-1975 (excepting 1965 and 1971). He managed or coached the team from 1976-1982. He played for the Australian national team from 1964-1974 and coached for them in 1977, 1979, 1981 and 1983. Shirt also coached the nation's foremost club team, the Auburn Orioles. Auburn's 1981 team featured 18-year-old Craig Shipley.
Shirt also played briefly in the minors; in 1967, he was with the Wytheville Reds (2-1, 2.19 in 17 G) and Tampa Tarpons (4.20 ERA in 11 G). Fellow Aussie Kevin Greatrex was his teammate in both places. They were two of the first men trained in Australia to sign with a U.S. major-league organization.
Shirt was inducted into the Australian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012, in a class with former major leaguer Glenn Williams and Australian women's national team pitcher Simone Wearne.
